Alert over food supplement or herbal "medicine"

Health authorities in Bahrain have withdrawn herbal products and food supplements produced by Lebanese firm, Zein Al Atat, Gulf Daily News has reported. The move came after a warning by the GCC Health Council saying that neither the company nor its products are registered with the Health Council and the company has made medical claims that have neither been accredited nor verified by the council. Bahraini customs officers have been notified to seize any Zein Al Atat products being brought into the kingdom, as their ingredients are unknown, the head of pharmacy and medicine monitoring at the ministry, Sahar Al Qahtani said.

BEIRUT: The political spat over the illegal herbal medicine industry appeared to ease Thursday, after a prominent MP said the authorities were finally taking action.
The matter was discussed Thursday by Parliament’s Health Committee, whose chairman, Beirut MP Atef Majdalani, said caretaker Health Minister Mohammad Jawad Khalifeh had agreed to cancel the permit of Zein al-Atat herbal and nutritional product manufacturing company.
“Khalifeh has taken an important decision to revoke the investment license of the factory owned by Zein al-Atat, which is located in Dbayyeh,” said Majdalani after the meeting.
Outdoor advertisements for these products will also be removed by the Internal Security Forces within a week, Majdalani said.
Last month, the Health Ministry issued a warning against the manufacturers of herbal products and nutritional supplements such as Zein al-Atat and Amanacare, whose products the ministry said would constitute hazardous risks to public health. http://www.dailystar.com.lb/article.asp?edition_id=1&categ_id=2&article_id=125015#ixzz1EaOJF9Xm (The Daily Star :: Lebanon News :: http://www.dailystar.com.lb)

Some of the questions that arise here are the following: this is an old issue and many people have been negatively affected and some lost their lives because of this: Why are advertisements still all over the country? Why are stores still selling these products? Why don't authorities IMMEDIATLY close the factories with red tape and work for the benefit of the public and the vulnerble populations: patients?!

  1. Not all that is natural is harmless.........

You raise an interesting point Dr. all this products must be vanished from the market since it has bad impact on public health and lead to dreadful effect on human health.

In fact and as a dietitian dietary supplements are often part of people’s health regimen. Being healthy includes making wise choices. This means knowing what goes into our body. If we take an herb or herbal blend, do we know what we are taking?
I am pretty sure that individual taking this herbal medicine are not aware about major health problems associated with this products.
Always we must talk to our medical provider before taking any herbs or supplements. All herbs, drugs, and other substances have potential drawbacks. Allergic reactions have been reported for nearly every herb, sometimes with life-threatening consequences.
Finally, it’s our own responsibility as human being to be knowledgeable about what we are consuming and don’t believe misleading claims regarding herbs. Let’s ask ourselves what is it? What is used for? How effective and safe? The sweet truth that not all that is natural is harmless. Furthermore, we must not consider a product to be a medicine, only we should use a product that is from a reputable source and approved by the FDA.

  2. Not only herbal remedies became widely used worldwide, but also did alternative medicine especially in Arabic Gulf states. When physician prescribes medication to his patient,he knows very well what that medicine would do and what its side effects on the patient are.On the other hand, people, who are working in herbs don't know neither the side effects nor the consequences that might happen to their clients in the long run.

  3. Some people have stricken by woman's pictures with elegant figures on the outdoor billboards and the massive media campaigns of advertisement. Moreover, people resorted to herbal medicine because they were looking for easy and rapid solution for their health problems. Therefore, government is responsible for refraining those cheaters from that people's abuse and punished them since these actions abolish the potential power of each community.

  4. Instead of striking for one leader or another, let us strike infront of these shops that are killing our people. They are still operating means they are either paying the government or the government is not serious. The Arab world is changing its leaders and we lebanese are sleeping like vegetables!
